Passengers to Keep Shoes, Belts On as GACL Introduces New Airport Screening System

Passengers using the Accra International Airport will no longer be required to remove their shoes, belts, laptops and other large electronic devices during routine security checks following the introduction of new advanced screening technology by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The new state-of-the-art security equipment has been installed at the passenger checkpoints of Terminals 2 and 3 as part of efforts to enhance aviation security while making the screening process faster and more convenient for travellers.

According to GACL, the upgraded system will allow passengers to leave laptops and other large electronic devices inside their cabin baggage during screening. Travellers will also no longer need to remove their shoes and belts unless they are selected for additional checks through security profiling.

The new technology also allows passengers to keep liquids, aerosols and gels in their hand luggage during screening, reducing the need for separate checks. However, GACL clarified that existing aviation security rules remain unchanged, with liquids above 100 millilitres per container still prohibited in cabin baggage.

The airport operator said the upgrade includes an Automatic Tray Return System, which will help improve passenger flow by returning screening trays faster, allowing travellers to quickly collect and repack their belongings.

GACL explained that the introduction of the new equipment will be done gradually, with the new systems operating alongside existing screening procedures during the transition period to ensure smooth airport operations.

The company has urged passengers and stakeholders to cooperate with airport officials as the new screening process is rolled out in the coming days.
