Prez Mahama Announces Free Visa Entry for All Africans from May 25

Ghana is set to introduce a free visa regime for all African travellers beginning May 25, 2026, in a move aimed at deepening continental integration and removing travel barriers across Africa.

President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement on Thursday, April 2, during bilateral talks with Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Peduase Presidential Lodge.

According to President Mahama, the policy will take effect on Africa Day and will allow Africans to obtain e-visas free of charge before travelling to Ghana.

“I am pleased to announce that effective May 25, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online free of charge,” he said.

He further emphasised the broader vision of seamless travel across the continent, suggesting a future where Africans can move freely between countries without visa restrictions.

“We can travel to each other’s countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto a plane and arrive, whether in Harare or Accra,” he added.

Beyond migration, the two leaders also explored opportunities to strengthen tourism cooperation. President Mahama proposed linking Zimbabwe’s iconic Victoria Falls with Ghana’s historic Cape Coast Castle to boost tourism and showcase Africa’s rich heritage and natural attractions.

The bilateral meeting also resulted in the signing of 10 agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation and driving economic growth between the two countries.
