The Next NPP Government Will Prioritize Cocoa Farmers’ Welfare — Oppong Nkrumah

Ofoase-Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has assured cocoa farmers that a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will prioritize their welfare and implement measures to address the challenges facing Ghana’s cocoa sector.

According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, Dr. Bawumia has already begun working on solutions to the ongoing difficulties confronting cocoa farmers and the industry as a whole.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has started the process of preparing solutions to the cocoa crisis. The next NPP administration will ensure the cocoa farmer is protected,” he stated in a post on X.

His comments follow a recent engagement between the NPP Minority Caucus Select Committee and cocoa farmers across several cocoa-growing communities. The committee, led by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, toured farming areas, interacted with farmers, and gathered feedback on the challenges affecting cocoa production.

The committee subsequently compiled its findings and recommendations into a report, which was presented to Dr. Bawumia for consideration.

Receiving the report, the NPP flagbearer indicated that the party was committed to developing practical policy alternatives to tackle the issues raised by farmers.

Dr. Bawumia explained that the report would be submitted to the party’s Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security and Agribusiness for technical review and further consultations with industry experts.

“We are going to ask this committee to technically review the findings, consult experts in the area, and then bring forward costed policy alternatives for us,” he said.

The move comes against the backdrop of government’s decision on February 12 to reduce the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season.

The price reduction has sparked concerns among stakeholders, with many farmers and industry players calling for measures to protect incomes and sustain cocoa production.

Dr. Bawumia said the party’s policy review process would focus on identifying sustainable solutions to support farmers, improve productivity, and strengthen the cocoa sector.
