Tensions Rise in Mthatha as Residents Plan Protest Over Jobs

Residents of Mthatha in South Africa are preparing to stage a protest on Thursday, April 23, over growing concerns about the presence of foreign nationals and access to employment opportunities.

The demonstration, which is expected to run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., is being organised by local residents who argue that job opportunities should be prioritised for South Africans. Protesters claim that foreigners are increasingly occupying roles that should be reserved for citizens.

Ahead of the protest, Chairman of the Ghanaian Community in Mthatha, Dr Yirenyi Gyekye Darko, said he has been in contact with local police authorities. According to him, security officials have assured that the demonstration will remain peaceful and will be closely monitored.

“I spoke to one of the station commanders, and he confirmed that there will be a peaceful demonstration. The police are taking precautionary measures to ensure everything remains under control,” he noted.

Despite these assurances, Dr Darko has urged members of the Ghanaian community to exercise caution. He advised them to remain indoors and temporarily suspend business activities until midday, when the situation is expected to stabilise.

“We have asked our people to stay indoors and not open their shops until about midday, when the situation is expected to normalise,” he said.

The planned protest reflects broader frustrations among some South Africans, who believe that foreign nationals including Ghanaians, Nigerians, and Zimbabweans are taking up employment opportunities meant for locals.

Organisers say their primary demand is for the government to prioritise citizens in job allocation, a concern that continues to fuel periodic tensions in parts of the country.
