A tragic incident occurred at Adenta New Site on Thursday after a one-storey residential building collapsed during a heavy downpour, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
According to reports, several occupants were trapped beneath the rubble when the structure suddenly gave way. Residents and bystanders quickly rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts before emergency personnel arrived.
3news reporter Joseph Ackah Blay, who was at the scene, reported that the trapped victims were eventually rescued and transported to the hospital for medical attention.
Eyewitnesses said one of the victims died before rescuers could pull him from the debris. Two others who were successfully rescued sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.
Some residents believe the collapse may have been caused by water infiltration resulting from the intense rainfall that affected parts of Accra earlier in the day.
In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that the collapsed structure was a one-storey building consisting of ground and first-floor apartments.
The Service stated that before its rescue team from the National Headquarters arrived at the scene, two victims had already been rescued and taken to the hospital.
“Prior to the arrival of the Ghana National Fire Service rescue team from National Headquarters, two persons had been rescued and conveyed to the hospital for medical treatment,” the statement said.
The GNFS added that rescue operations were ongoing as emergency personnel continued searching for a woman and a child believed to be trapped beneath the debris.
Authorities are expected to investigate the exact cause of the collapse as rescue efforts continue.
