Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, to hand Real Madrid victory over Barcelona in a thrilling El Clásico encounter at Camp Nou.
The French forward opened the scoring four minutes before half-time when Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance of Yan Diomande’s low cross deflected off him and flew past goalkeeper Joan García.
Real Madrid continued to threaten, with Mbappé hitting the post, while Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal missed a close-range opportunity as both sides pushed for goals before the break.
Barcelona responded in the second half, with captain Raphinha restoring parity 16 minutes after the restart. He collected a pass from Pedri before firing through the legs of Jude Bellingham into the far corner.
Martín nearly made amends for his earlier error, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin produced an excellent one-handed save to keep the scores level.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Bellingham initiated a brilliant move from the halfway line. Substitute Eduardo Camavinga carried the ball forward before setting up Mbappé, who calmly finished into an unguarded net to seal the victory.
The result dealt a blow to Barcelona’s attempt to set a new record for consecutive victories at the start of a Spanish top-flight season. Hansi Flick’s side could not surpass the nine-match winning streak achieved by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 campaign.
Mbappé has now scored 11 league goals this season, including eight in seven El Clásico appearances across all competitions since joining Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. Only Raphinha, with 13 goals, has scored more in La Liga this season.
Despite Mbappé’s impressive record in the fixture, Real Madrid had won only one of the six previous matches in which he featured before this latest victory, including a 4-3 league defeat in May 2025 despite his hat-trick.
Real Madrid secured the win without suspended forward Vinícius Júnior and first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was unavailable because of illness. Lunin stepped in and delivered a strong performance, making three first-half saves from England winger Anthony Gordon before his crucial stop against Martín.
Barcelona remain top of La Liga with a two-point lead over second-placed Atlético Madrid after 10 matches, while Real Madrid sit third, one point further behind.
