New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s spokesperson, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says he no longer feels safe expressing his views under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
According to him, Ghana’s democratic space and freedom of expression are increasingly coming under threat, making many people fearful of speaking openly on national issues.
His comments come ahead of the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6. The party says the protest is intended to draw attention to what it describes as threats to the rule of law, constitutional governance and fundamental rights.
Speaking on Joy News on Wednesday, August 5, Mr. Aboagye said the demonstration was driven by concerns among some Ghanaians that expressing their opinions could expose them to repercussions.
He said he personally feels vulnerable because of his outspoken nature and his willingness to engage in public debates.
“I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I have written to the Chief Justice. I personally don’t feel safe because I talk and I can’t stop talking. I love to talk, and I love to debate.
“I feel that my mouth will put me into trouble,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye argued that freedom of expression remains one of the most important pillars of Ghana’s democracy and should not be exercised with fear.
He said the thousands of people expected to participate in Thursday’s demonstration share similar concerns about the state of democracy and the ability of citizens to freely express their views.
He maintained that Ghanaians should be able to speak about national issues without fear of being targeted or punished for their opinions.
