Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has moved swiftly to engage South African authorities following the circulation of troubling videos suggesting xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Minister confirmed that he personally contacted South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, to discuss the matter and ensure a coordinated response.
“I have this morning held a telephone conversation with my South African counterpart… on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” Hon Ablakwa revealed.
He noted that the South African government has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, with Mr Lamola expressing sympathy for the victims and assuring that investigations are underway. “The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full scale investigations into the depressing incidents,” he said.
As part of immediate steps being taken, South Africa is expected to brief African ambassadors on the issue. Hon Ablakwa described this as a positive move toward transparency and collective engagement.
The Minister also highlighted Ghana’s ongoing diplomatic efforts on the ground, stating that he has maintained constant communication with Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa to manage the situation effectively.
Offering reassurance, he confirmed that the main victim captured in the viral video has been located and is receiving assistance. “He is doing very well,” Hon Ablakwa stated, adding that no Ghanaian life has been lost.
He urged Ghanaians to remain calm while authorities work to resolve the matter, expressing confidence in the country’s ability to protect its citizens abroad.
Reaffirming government’s commitment, Hon Ablakwa stressed that the safety of Ghanaians remains a top priority, while also calling for unity across the continent. He cautioned against allowing isolated acts of violence to undermine the spirit of Pan-African solidarity, emphasizing that Africans must remain united despite the actions of a few.
