Gov’t Announces GHC2.00 Diesel, GHC0.36 Petrol Price Cushion from April 16

The government has announced a temporary reduction in fuel costs, revealing it will absorb GHC2.00 per litre on diesel and GHC0.36 per litre on petrol in the next pricing window starting April 16, 2026.

The directive was contained in a press release issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, as part of efforts to cushion Ghanaians against rising fuel prices.

According to the statement, the intervention is targeted at easing the financial strain on households, transport operators, and businesses affected by increasing petroleum prices on the international market.

“This intervention is intended to cushion customers and ease the cost burden on households, transport operators, and businesses,” the Minister stated.

Government explained that the move, which has received Cabinet approval, comes in response to sustained global oil price increases that have significantly pushed up ex-pump prices in Ghana.

The measure, however, is temporary and will run for a period of one month, during which authorities will continue to monitor developments in the global oil market.

“Government will continue to closely monitor developments in the global oil market and assess the need for further policy adjustments,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its broader economic agenda, government stressed its commitment to maintaining stability and protecting livelihoods amid external shocks.

“Government remains committed to maintaining price stability, protecting livelihoods, and supporting Ghana’s economic recovery in the face of external shocks.”

The intervention is expected to provide some relief across the economy, particularly in the transport and commercial sectors where fuel costs play a major role.
