Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as Awuche and widely recognised as Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the age of 33 following a prolonged illness.
Family sources confirmed that he passed away at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Monday, July 27, 2026, bringing to an end a long and difficult battle with serious health complications.
Awuche became well known across Ghana, particularly in the Northern Region, because of his extraordinary height. While his unique stature made him a familiar public figure, it also exposed him to significant health challenges that affected his mobility and overall quality of life.
Over the past few years, he battled recurring medical conditions linked to his unusual growth, resulting in frequent hospital admissions and public appeals for financial support to fund his treatment.
Earlier this year, businessman Ibrahim Mahama stepped in to support his medical care after specialists assessed his condition. The intervention reportedly helped prevent the amputation of one of his legs and gave renewed hope that his health could improve.
Despite his struggles, Awuche remained optimistic and often expressed his determination to recover and live a normal life. Sadly, his condition worsened in recent months, and he passed away while receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
News of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, where many Ghanaians have paid tribute to him as a humble, gentle, and resilient man whose courage in the face of adversity inspired many.
His passing marks the end of a life that touched countless people, not only because of his remarkable height but also because of the strength and dignity he displayed throughout his health battle.
