Ghana records 6.4% economic growth in Q1 2026 as services sector leads expansion

Ghana’s economy grew by 6.4% in the first quarter of 2026, according to new data released by the Ghana Statistical Service. The figure represents a slight improvement over the 6.2% recorded in the same period last year, indicating continued expansion across key sectors of the economy.

Presenting the data, Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu noted that the services sector remained the strongest driver of growth during the period under review.

Non-oil GDP also performed steadily, expanding by 6.3%, reflecting broad-based activity across major sectors of the economy.

The services sector recorded the highest growth rate of 7.1%, supported mainly by strong performances in information and communication, which surged by 25.2%. Transport and storage also grew significantly by 13%, while the trade sub-sector expanded by 7%.

The industrial sector recorded notable improvement, growing by 6.9% compared to 4.1% in the same quarter of 2025. This growth was driven largely by mining and quarrying, which expanded by 10.7%, alongside a rebound in oil and gas production, which posted 7% growth.

In contrast, agriculture recorded a more modest growth of 4%, with the sector weighed down by a sharp 18.5% contraction in the fishing sub-sector.

Dr. Iddrisu further explained that the seasonally adjusted Gross Domestic Product grew by 1.6% quarter-on-quarter, reflecting steady economic momentum throughout the first three months of the year.

He also highlighted that the monthly Composite Index of Economic Activity (CIEA) remained positive across the quarter, recording 6.1% growth in January, 7.7% in February, and 5.4% in March.

According to him, the data points to the need for sustained macroeconomic stability, stronger infrastructure development, deeper digital transformation, and increased private sector participation, while addressing persistent weaknesses in sectors such as fishing, accommodation and food services, and water and sewerage.
