President John Dramani Mahama has met with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with the two leaders agreeing to streamline the registration of Egyptian pharmaceutical products in Ghana.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit and focused on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Ghana and Egypt.
President Mahama said the discussions reflected the longstanding pan-African ties between the two countries, dating back to the close relationship between Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
He also expressed Ghana’s appreciation to President el-Sisi and the Egyptian government for their support for Ghana’s reparations resolution at the United Nations.
According to President Mahama, the agreement to streamline the registration of Egyptian pharmaceutical products is expected to improve access to medicines in Ghana while creating opportunities to attract investment into the pharmaceutical sector.
The two leaders also agreed to deepen security cooperation, particularly in intelligence sharing, capacity building and counter-terrorism efforts. They further pledged continued collaboration under the Sahel-Gulf of Guinea Accord.
President Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s plans for a new capital city and the expansion of social housing, noting that Ghana is interested in drawing on Egypt’s technical expertise and experience from the development of its New Administrative Capital.
He thanked President el-Sisi for Egypt’s continued partnership and support for Ghana.
