Dagbon to Hold Third-Day Prayers for Late Yaa-Naa Abukari II on July 16

The Dagbon Traditional Council has announced that special third-day prayers for the late Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The prayers, which are part of Islamic mourning rites, will take place at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Council has invited chiefs, residents, and members of the public to join in offering prayers for the repose of the King’s soul.

The announcement comes after the burial of Yaa-Naa Abukari II in the early hours of Monday, July 13, within the sacred precincts of the Gbewaa Palace. The burial was conducted in accordance with Islamic tradition and the customs of the Dagbon Kingdom.

In a statement following his passing, the Dagbon Traditional Council described the late Yaa-Naa as a unifying figure whose reign was characterised by efforts to promote peace, harmony, and development across Dagbon.

The Council appealed to the people of Dagbon to honour his memory by preserving the peace and refraining from acts that could disrupt the mourning period. It also called on Ghanaians and friends of Dagbon to join the kingdom in a time of reflection and prayer.

According to the Council, details regarding the full funeral rites of the late monarch will be announced at a later date in line with Dagbon tradition and royal protocol.

Yaa-Naa Abukari II, who served as President of the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, bringing his reign to an end and plunging the kingdom into mourning.
