Court Gives Wontumi Final Deadline to Present Witnesses in Ongoing Trial

An Accra court has directed lawyers for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to present any additional witnesses in his ongoing criminal trial by Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The order was issued in the case Republic v. Bernard Antwi Boasiako & 2 Others, after defence counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, requested more time to call additional witnesses following the testimony of the first accused person, Chairman Wontumi.

However, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, opposed the application. He argued that the defence team had earlier assured the court that the witnesses would be available during the week but failed to produce them.

He also noted that no witness statements had been filed to justify the request for an adjournment. According to him, court procedures allow proceedings to continue or be concluded where witnesses are unavailable for cross-examination.

After hearing both sides, the judge granted a final extension, ordering the defence to produce its witnesses by May 28, 2026. The court warned that failure to comply would be taken as an indication that the defence has no further witnesses to call.

In that event, the court indicated it would move to the next stage of the trial, including final legal addresses, before setting a date for judgment.
