Baba Jamal M. Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency following his victory in the recent by-election.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in Parliament on Tuesday, March 10, where the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, administered the oath of office.
Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament comes after a by-election was conducted in the Ayawaso East Constituency following the demise of the area’s former Member of Parliament.
Prior to contesting the seat, Baba Jamal resigned from his position as Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria to participate in the NDC parliamentary primaries. He eventually secured the party’s ticket despite controversy surrounding the February 7 primary, during which allegations of vote-buying surfaced.
Administering the oath, Speaker Alban Bagbin reminded the newly sworn-in MP of his responsibility to serve the people of Ayawaso East and Ghana as a whole.
“You voluntarily offered yourself to serve the good people of the Ayawaso East Constituency. In your campaign, you stated that you want to serve them as a Member of Parliament,” the Speaker said.
He further stressed the importance of accountability in public service.
“You are going to serve Ghana and not as a High Commissioner. I will hold you accountable to the good people of the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he added.
Baba Jamal previously served as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region from 2009 to 2013.
