McCarthy-Mallam Road Rehabilitation Begins After Public Outcry

Rehabilitation works have begun on the McCarthy-Mallam stretch of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway following persistent public complaints about potholes, worsening road conditions and heavy traffic congestion.

The development comes days after the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, petitioned the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, on October 19, 2026, to order urgent repairs to the Weija Junction-Mallam section.

In his petition, Mr Shaib said a journey that should normally take about three minutes between Weija Junction and Mallam could take more than two hours because of extensive potholes and the deteriorating road surface.

He urged the Ghana Highway Authority and other relevant agencies to inspect the affected stretch and carry out immediate repairs to ease congestion and improve road conditions for motorists.

The highway serves thousands of commuters travelling between Kasoa, Winneba, Weija-Gbawe and several parts of Accra, including Kaneshie, Odorkor and Dansoman. Its deteriorating condition has made daily journeys increasingly difficult, particularly during peak hours.

Motorists have also raised concerns about road safety and the cost of maintaining their vehicles, as drivers are forced to manoeuvre around potholes and damaged sections, increasing the risk of accidents and damage to tyres and suspension systems.

Meanwhile, poor drainage and flooding have previously been identified as contributing factors to the deterioration of parts of the Kasoa-Mallam corridor. Along the SCC-Old Barrier stretch, wastewater flowing onto the road has worsened conditions and contributed to traffic congestion.

The commencement of rehabilitation works is expected to address some of the difficulties faced by commuters, although the extent and timeline of the repairs will determine how quickly traffic conditions improve along the busy highway.
