Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says the government’s New Economy programme is aimed at increasing local production, reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported goods and creating more jobs for Ghanaians.
According to Dr Forson, the programme is built around encouraging the production of goods locally while creating opportunities for businesses and workers across the country.
“Our mission is to produce more of what we consume and create more jobs here at home,” he said.
He said Ghana should view every imported product as an opportunity to consider whether it can be manufactured locally.
“Every import is an opportunity to ask: why can’t we make it in Ghana?” Dr Forson said.
The Finance Minister described the New Economy programme as a shift towards a more productive economy, with greater emphasis on domestic production, employment and economic growth.
“That is the promise of the New Economy: Ghana producing. Ghanaians working. Prosperity growing,” he said.
Dr Forson has consistently highlighted the need to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imports and strengthen domestic production since becoming Finance Minister in January 2025.
The government says the approach forms part of broader efforts to rebuild the economy following the country’s recent fiscal challenges while creating a stronger foundation for sustainable growth and job creation.
