The government is set to undertake a major procurement of furniture for selected Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country as part of efforts to phase out the double-track system.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has identified schools with adequate classroom infrastructure but insufficient furniture to accommodate all students at once.
According to him, providing the necessary desks and other furniture would allow such schools to return to a single-track system without the need for additional classroom infrastructure.
“There are many schools that if we provided them with furniture, we can take them off double track and we will do that. We will undertake a major procurement of furniture to fix that,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu made the announcement during a surprise monitoring visit to selected schools in the Western Region, including Tarkwa Senior High School.
He explained that furniture shortages remain one of the factors keeping some schools on the double-track system despite having enough classrooms and other facilities.
The Minister said the government has identified schools where the availability of classroom space could allow them to accommodate students under a single-track arrangement if adequate furniture is provided.
The planned procurement is therefore expected to increase the capacity of such schools and support the government’s broader efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions in senior high schools.
