Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to striking university administrators to give the government one month to address concerns over their allowances and conditions of service.
Members of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) are currently on strike over what they describe as disparities in Market Premium and other allowances between senior teaching and non-teaching staff.
The strike has disrupted administrative activities in some public universities, with the unions demanding action to address what they consider unfair differences in remuneration.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the unions on Monday, August 17, Mr Iddrisu said his ministry was engaging the Ministry of Finance to find a lasting solution.
He explained that the Finance Ministry needs verified data on the number of affected staff and the financial implications before any payment decisions can be made.
The Minister therefore urged the unions to provide the necessary information and appealed for one month to work on the matter.
“Give me one month from today, but I need the data,” he said.
The latest engagement is expected to pave the way for further discussions between the government and the unions, with the hope of resolving the dispute and restoring normal administrative activities at the affected universities.
