The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the value of the cedi, keeping inflation under control and maintaining financial stability as Ghana’s economic recovery continues.
BoG Governor, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, said the central bank would remain cautious despite recent improvements in key economic indicators, particularly as global uncertainties continue to pose risks to the economy.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani in the Bono Region, Dr. Asiama said the Bank’s priority was to create a stable economic environment that would give businesses the confidence to plan, invest and expand.
He noted that while Ghana had made encouraging progress, the country could not afford to become complacent, especially with geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil prices posing potential risks to the local economy.
“The progress we have made is encouraging, but we must not become complacent. The global economy remains uncertain, and events beyond our borders can still affect us.”
Dr. Asiama said the BoG would continue to take measures aimed at protecting the cedi, keeping inflation low, preserving financial stability and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The stakeholder engagement brought together representatives from the business community, the Association of Bankers, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), as well as heads of community banks, forex bureaus and microfinance institutions.
According to the Governor, Ghana’s economic indicators are showing signs of improvement, but external developments could still put pressure on prices and the local currency.
He said the current 14% policy rate provides the Bank with room to continue managing inflation while creating space for businesses to invest and expand.
Dr. Asiama also assured stakeholders that the BoG remained committed to maintaining an orderly and well-functioning foreign exchange market.
He further reiterated his commitment to improving transparency and openness at the central bank.
“Our goal is simple – to create an economic environment where businesses can grow with confidence, households can plan for the future, and every Ghanaian can share in the benefits of a stable and growing economy,” he said.
