The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has dismissed claims by Dennis Miracles Aboagye that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) never questioned him over an alleged GH¢55 million financial irregularity.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, who serves as the 2028 campaign Director for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made the claim after he was released on bail from EOCO custody on July 14.
He disputed reports linking his arrest to the GH¢55 million allegation, insisting that investigators questioned him over different transactions instead.
According to him, the issues raised during his interrogation involved about GH¢9 million in transactions, another GH¢5,000, and a procurement matter involving GH¢5.2 million.
“I am being questioned over about GH¢9 million, not the GH¢55 million amount circulating in the public domain,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on Tuesday, July 21.
However, speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, July 26, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai rejected the claim, arguing that Mr Aboagye was fully aware of the reasons behind his arrest and detention.
“Of course, he is completely wrong. He cannot say that he was not questioned about GH¢55 million. He is very much aware of why he was arrested and detained,” the Deputy Attorney-General stated.
Dr. Srem-Sai cautioned the public against accepting statements made by persons under investigation without critically examining the facts, noting that suspects may present accounts that do not reflect the full circumstances of a case.
He questioned why the public would accept Mr Aboagye’s version of events without seeking further clarification.
“Recently, Miracles came out to say that nobody questioned him about GH¢55 million but he was questioned about GH¢5 million and people believed that. Because Miracles is saying that, everybody believed that is the truth,” he said.
The Deputy Attorney-General explained that investigative bodies such as EOCO are not required to publicly respond to every allegation or claim made by persons under investigation, as doing so could affect ongoing investigations.
He stressed that the role of law enforcement agencies is to gather evidence and, where necessary, prosecute cases in court rather than engage in public exchanges.
“EOCO is not under any obligation to be responding to things like that. Law enforcement agencies are not under any obligation to respond. At the end of the day, we bring you to court, we will charge you and you will have your day,” he stated.
Dr. Srem-Sai added that the final charges, if any, would depend on the evidence gathered by investigators and not solely on the issues discussed during questioning.
He urged the public not to interpret the silence of investigative agencies as an indication that claims made by suspects are accurate.
“Because of the nature of the work we do and because it is investigation, it is not everything that law enforcement can respond to. But that doesn’t mean that the person who is saying it is right or correct,” he said.
