Ghana Frustrate England with Gritty Goalless Draw at World Cup

Ghana produced a disciplined defensive performance to hold England to a 0-0 draw in their Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston, earning a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.

The Black Stars were forced to withstand long periods of English pressure but remained organised throughout, with goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivering a standout display to keep the Europeans at bay.

England controlled much of the possession and created the better chances, particularly after the break, but failed to find a way past Ghana’s resolute defence. Their closest opportunity arrived in the 86th minute when Bukayo Saka unleashed a low strike from outside the penalty area, only for Asare to make a crucial save. Moments later, Nico O’Reilly headed against the crossbar as England’s frustrations grew.

Captain Harry Kane also squandered a promising opportunity earlier in the second half, firing over the bar from close range. Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson were among several England players who tested Ghana’s defence, but the breakthrough never came.

While Ghana spent much of the game defending, they occasionally threatened on the counterattack. Prince Adu saw an effort blocked, while Antoine Semenyo was flagged offside after a dangerous attacking move. Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu also looked to exploit spaces behind the English defence whenever opportunities arose.

The contest became increasingly physical in midfield, with both sides committing tactical fouls to disrupt attacking moves. Ghana forward Iñaki Williams was shown a yellow card during the second half as the Black Stars worked hard to contain England’s attacking threat.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of fresh energy. England introduced Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers, while Ghana responded with changes that included Abdul Fatawu, Prince Adu and Kojo Peprah Oppong.

Despite England’s dominance in possession and chances created, Ghana’s defensive discipline and Asare’s heroics ensured the match ended goalless.

The result leaves both teams with a point from the encounter, with Ghana taking confidence from a resilient display, while England will be left ruing missed opportunities in their quest for all three points.
