Interior Ministry Moves to Suspend Kantanka Security Licence Over Kwabenya Incident

The Ministry of the Interior has suspended, with immediate effect, the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited following allegations of serious breaches involving its personnel during a security operation at Kwabenya in Accra.

The decision comes after reports that personnel of the private security firm allegedly used unapproved uniforms and were found in possession of firearms and ammunition without authorisation while on duty on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

In a statement issued on June 22, 2026 and signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry said preliminary investigations suggested possible violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571).

The statement noted that the alleged conduct “constitutes a serious breach with significant implications for public safety and security,” particularly given the sensitive nature of firearm handling by private security operatives.

As part of the directive, the Ministry ordered the company to halt all operations immediately while investigations continue.

“Consequently, the company is directed to immediately cease all operations forthwith pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter,” the statement said.

The Ministry also cautioned the public and institutions against engaging Kantanka Security Services Limited until further notice, stressing that the suspension remains a temporary administrative measure.

It further instructed the company to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities say the outcome of the investigations will determine the next line of action in accordance with Ghana’s laws regulating private security operations.
