The Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate suspension of all Senior High School (SHS) graduation ceremonies across Ghana as it reviews growing concerns about the increasing display of wealth and extravagance associated with such events.
In a statement issued on June 20, 2026, the Ministry said it had taken note of widespread public criticism over the lavish celebrations that have become a feature of graduation ceremonies in some schools.
According to the Ministry, educational institutions are established to promote learning, discipline, character development and responsible citizenship. It stressed that graduation ceremonies should remain focused on celebrating students’ academic achievements and personal growth rather than becoming platforms for excessive displays of affluence.
The Ministry noted that school ceremonies must reflect the values of modesty, dignity and respect that are expected within the educational environment.
It also condemned any actions by students, parents, guardians or other stakeholders that encourage extravagance and shift attention away from the true purpose of graduation events.
The suspension, the Ministry explained, forms part of a broader review aimed at ensuring that graduation ceremonies are conducted in a manner that aligns with the principles and values of Ghana’s education system.
Officials say the review will help reinforce discipline, responsibility and the core objectives of education while preserving the significance of school graduation ceremonies.
