Government repatriates 327 Ghanaians stranded in Côte d’Ivoire after Port Bouët demolitions

The Government of Ghana has begun the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals who were left stranded in Port Bouët, a municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, following a demolition exercise that displaced residents and destroyed homes, businesses and sources of livelihood.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 12, 2026, the decision was taken to assist affected citizens who “became stranded after losing their homes, businesses and means of survival as a result of the demolitions.”

The Ministry confirmed that the evacuation exercise is being carried out in phases, with 228 of the affected Ghanaians already transported back home on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

It further stated that the remaining group is scheduled to return on Friday, June 12, bringing the total number of repatriated nationals to 327.

Officials explained that the affected individuals had been living in communities impacted by the demolition drive and were left without shelter or financial support to sustain themselves in Côte d’Ivoire.

To support the operation, the Government of Ghana provided buses and trucks to transport the returnees and their belongings free of charge.

The Ministry also disclosed that Ivorian authorities have indicated willingness to compensate victims affected by the demolition exercise. Ghana, it said, is currently engaging its counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the promised compensation is delivered to all eligible individuals.

“The Ministry is actively engaging with the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the promised compensation is paid to affected Ghanaian nationals,” the statement noted.

Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan is expected to continue coordinating with relevant stakeholders and monitoring developments surrounding the compensation process.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, the Ministry said it remains dedicated to the welfare and protection of Ghanaians abroad and will continue to support the safe return and reintegration of the affected citizens.

It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire and all partners involved in facilitating the repatriation exercise.

The Ministry assured that further updates will be communicated as the situation develops.
