Gov’t to review BECE timetable to ease exam pressure on candidates

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that government is reviewing the timetable for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to give candidates more time between papers and reduce the stress associated with the current schedule.

Speaking at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School on Wednesday, June 10, the Minister noted concerns from students and stakeholders about the existing arrangement, where examinations are written from Monday to Friday within a single week.

He acknowledged that the compressed timetable places significant pressure on candidates, limiting the time available for revision between papers.

“I understand that our schedule of the BECE was just Monday to Friday, and that put many of you under some stress,” he said.

According to him, the proposed adjustment will extend the examination period to create longer breaks between papers, allowing candidates more time to prepare for each subject.

Under the new arrangement being considered, the BECE would begin on a Wednesday and end the following Wednesday, introducing wider intervals between papers as well as a weekend break within the examination period.

“The government is reviewing the BECE exams calendar. So now the BECE will begin on a Wednesday and end the following Wednesday, so that adequate time is given to our learners to prepare for BECE across the country,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve the examination experience and support better performance among candidates by reducing pressure during the exam period.

He further disclosed that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) would oversee the implementation of the revised timetable once the review is completed and approved.

The proposed adjustment is expected to benefit thousands of BECE candidates nationwide by giving them more breathing space between papers and a less intense examination schedule.
