Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could face defeat in the 2024 general elections if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manages to secure 30% of the votes in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking in an interview on Angel TV on December 3, 2024, the Suame MP highlighted the strategic importance of the Ashanti Region to the NPP’s electoral fortunes, describing it as the party’s stronghold.
“Where your property is, that is where your heart is. The NPP’s heart is in the Ashanti Region because it consistently delivers the majority of votes for the party,” he explained.
He further noted that while the NDC traditionally dominates in the Volta Region, they have consistently aimed to increase their vote share in the Ashanti Region.
“The NDC often sets a target of securing 30% of votes in the Ashanti Region. If they achieve this, it could significantly alter the outcome of the elections,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu remarked.
According to the Suame MP, such a scenario would make it difficult for the NPP to secure victory in the upcoming December 7 elections. “If the NDC can get 30%, they have won the election, and the NPP should forget about the election. That is why Mahama is intensifying efforts to win more votes,” he added.
The Ashanti Region, widely regarded as the electoral stronghold of the NPP, has historically played a pivotal role in the party’s successes. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s comments underscore the high stakes in the region as the country prepares for the 2024 polls.
