Ghana Postpones South Africa Evacuation Exercise Amid Legal, Logistical Processes

The evacuation of hundreds of Ghanaians from South Africa has been delayed for a few more days as authorities work to complete critical legal and logistical procedures required for the operation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that although the evacuation was expected to begin on Thursday, May 21, preparations are still ongoing due to the scale of the exercise and regulatory conditions imposed by South African authorities.

More than 800 Ghanaians have reportedly registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria requesting evacuation amid renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

According to the Ministry, the delay is linked to “mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits” that must be secured before flights can proceed.

Government said officials from both Ghana and South Africa remain in active discussions to fast-track the process and ensure a smooth evacuation exercise.

“Ghanaian and South African authorities have agreed to enhanced and more efficient pre-evacuation modalities to expedite the process,” the statement indicated.

Despite the postponement, government assured stranded Ghanaians that efforts are being intensified to ensure their safe return to Ghana as soon as possible.

The Ministry also praised affected citizens for their understanding and patience, promising regular updates as arrangements continue.
