Ibrahim Mahama Links Damang Mine Takeover to Bold Infrastructure Plans

The takeover of the Damang mine by Engineers & Planners is being positioned as more than just a change in operators. For the company’s CEO, Ibrahim Mahama, it represents a chance to demonstrate that Ghanaian-owned firms can not only manage large-scale mining operations but also deliver meaningful development to surrounding communities.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony on April 18, Mahama outlined an ambitious vision that goes beyond gold production. His plans include building community astroturfs, constructing an airport in Damang within six months, and developing a road network that would link the mining area to Cape Coast within two years.

“We’ve applied for Damang to have an airport, and within six months, Damang will have an airport,” he stated confidently, adding that improved road connectivity would significantly enhance access to the area.

The takeover follows the expiration of the lease previously held by Gold Fields Ghana, after which the concession was opened to competitive bidding under the supervision of the Minerals Commission. Engineers & Planners emerged as the winning bidder, having met key technical and financial requirements, including proof of access to at least $500 million in funding.

Government officials have framed the transition as part of a broader strategy to deepen local participation in Ghana’s mining sector while maintaining production levels and safeguarding jobs. For Mahama, however, the stakes appear to go beyond operational success.

He stressed that the Damang project should serve as a symbol of Ghanaian capability and self-reliance. “This is not political talk. This is real talk,” he said, emphasizing that the promises made are intended to be delivered.

His message was clear: the success of Damang under local ownership will be judged not only by output but by its impact on people’s lives.
