Security Agencies Bust Cybercrime Network in Greater Accra, 53 Nigerian Nationals Arrested

A multi-agency security operation has dismantled a network of suspected cybercrime centres operating across several suburbs in the Greater Accra Region, leading to the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals.

The coordinated operation, carried out on January 16 and 17, 2026, followed actionable intelligence provided by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA). According to the intelligence, young men were allegedly being lured into Ghana under false pretences and subsequently coerced into engaging in various cybercriminal activities by ringleaders operating from residential locations.

The affected areas included East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba. Acting on this information, a joint task force made up of personnel from National Security, the CSA, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the Police SWAT Unit conducted simultaneous raids on the identified premises.

During the operation, authorities carefully distinguished between suspected masterminds and possible victims. Nine individuals were arrested as suspects believed to be key operators, while forty-four others found using laptops in the apartments were classified as rescued victims. Investigators believe these individuals were deceived and exploited after being brought into the country.

Security agencies also seized a substantial cache of items believed to have been used in the criminal activities, including 62 laptop computers, 52 assorted mobile phones, and two pump-action guns.

In a statement issued on January 18, Communications Minister Sam George confirmed that all arrested persons have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations.

“We caution foreign nationals invited to Ghana to verify claims made by their fellow nationals to lure them here,” the Minister warned.

He added that the operation forms part of a broader and sustained crackdown on cybercrime. According to him, suspects from earlier operations have either been handed over to Nigerian authorities at the Seme border or are currently facing prosecution in Ghanaian courts.

“Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” Mr George stated, commending the Cyber Security Authority and partner law enforcement agencies for what he described as decisive and coordinated action.
