President Mahama Issues Executive Instrument to Restructure Civil Service Ministries

In a significant policy move, President John Dramani Mahama has restructured the energy sector by incorporating “Green Transition” into the portfolio of the newly established Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

The announcement was formalized in the Civil Service (Ministries) Instrument, 2025, issued on January 9, 2025.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is among 23 ministries listed in the Executive Instrument (E.I. 1), aimed at enhancing governance and addressing key developmental challenges. This new addition highlights the government’s commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable energy practices as part of its national development agenda.

The inclusion of green transition signifies a strategic focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reducing Ghana’s reliance on fossil fuels. This move aligns with global efforts to combat climate change while ensuring a sustainable energy future for the country.

President Mahama’s administration has reiterated its dedication to achieving a carbon-neutral economy and fostering technological innovations in the energy sector. Stakeholders have lauded the creation of this new portfolio, viewing it as a bold step toward sustainable development and energy reform.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition will be tasked with formulating policies to support renewable energy initiatives, modernizing the energy infrastructure, and ensuring energy security while promoting environmental sustainability.

This development forms part of a broader restructuring of the Civil Service ministries to address critical areas such as food security, digital innovation, and job creation, as highlighted in the Executive Instrument.

Ghanaians are optimistic that this new direction will position the country as a leader in green energy transformation across Africa.
