Oti Adjei Defends Current Black Stars Squad, Rejects “Weakest Team” Claims

General Manager for Sports at Media General, Michael Oti Adjei, has dismissed suggestions that the current Black Stars team is the weakest Ghana has assembled in recent years, arguing that the squad still has enough quality to compete strongly at the highest level.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, June 22, Oti Adjei said many of the players in the present squad gained important international experience after making their debuts in 2022 and have since remained consistent members of the national team setup.

According to him, that continuity has helped build a level of familiarity and stability within the group, even though the team is missing some key figures.

“The reason I don’t think this is the weakest team is that a lot of the players made their debuts in 2022 and have carried on that experience to this side. The only minus is that this team is without Mohammed Kudus and the rest. And this seems to be a problem around it,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that not all players have developed as expected since breaking into the squad during that period, noting that progress has been uneven.

“Another problem is that many of the players in this team from the 2022 squad have not built on that,” he added.

Despite these concerns, Oti Adjei maintained that the current team still possesses enough talent to challenge any opponent on its day.

“I think this team should have enough personnel to give any team a good run for their money,” he stated.

He also reflected on earlier Black Stars teams, highlighting the 2010 squad as one of Ghana’s strongest, largely due to its blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents who were all performing at a high level at the same time.

According to him, that balance was a key factor in the team’s success on the global stage.
