The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed an immediate stop to all forms of premature presidential campaigning within the party, cautioning members that no such activities are currently sanctioned under the party’s constitutional framework.
The directive, issued on Thursday, May 29, 2026, followed a meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as leader of the party.
In a statement, the Council expressed concern over what it described as growing internal agitation driven by early campaigning and political positioning ahead of future internal elections.
“The Council has observed with concern reports of premature presidential campaigns and related political activities within the party, which are creating unease among members and the general public,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming the party’s current focus on governance and national development, the Elders stressed that members must prioritise the implementation of the government’s agenda rather than internal competition.
“The NDC is currently focused on delivering on the mandate entrusted to it by the people of Ghana. At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts,” the Council stated.
The statement further referenced Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which regulates the timing and procedures for presidential primaries. According to the provision, the National Executive Committee (NEC) is solely responsible for determining when and how presidential primaries are held, with strict timelines depending on whether the party is in power or opposition.
The Council emphasised that until the NEC officially activates the process and announces a timetable, no individual or group is permitted to engage in campaigning activities of any form.
“Accordingly, the Council of Elders directs all persons engaged in such activities to cease forthwith. These include campaigning, mobilisation, endorsements, publicity, or any actions intended to promote presidential ambitions,” the statement warned.
It concluded with a call for discipline, unity, and focus within the party, insisting that internal contests must be set aside for now.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the Council added.
