Legendary Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong Passes On

Ghana’s gospel music fraternity is in mourning following the death of renowned gospel musician and composer, Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the celebrated Asomafo Gospel Group.

The sad news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with Myjoyonline.com. As of now, details surrounding the circumstances of his passing have not been officially disclosed.

Yaw Sarpong’s death comes barely a month after the loss of Maame Tiwa, a core member and pillar of the Asomafo group. Her passing dealt a heavy blow to the group and the wider gospel music community, making this latest loss even more painful for fans and colleagues.

For several years, Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health, a condition that occasionally forced him to step back from active public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence through his leadership of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The group played a pivotal role in shaping modern Akan gospel music, earning admiration for its strong lyrical depth, doctrinal soundness, and disciplined musical style.

Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced numerous iconic gospel songs that have stood the test of time. Classics such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa remain staples in churches across Ghana and continue to inspire generations of worshippers.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Yaw Sarpong’s legacy as a trailblazer, mentor, and minister of the gospel through music will forever remain etched in Ghana’s cultural and spiritual history.
