Junior Doctors Put Strike on Hold, Give Government Last Chance

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has put its planned nationwide strike on hold after reaching a temporary understanding with the Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders.

The association, which had earlier announced a complete withdrawal of services over unpaid salaries and delayed postings, said it was suspending the action as a show of goodwill and in the interest of patients who rely heavily on public hospitals for medical care.

“This suspension is not the end of the matter. It is simply an opportunity for government to demonstrate that it is serious about addressing the issues we have raised,” the group said in a statement.

The junior doctors made it clear that the suspension is conditional. If the government fails to honour the commitments and timelines agreed upon, the association has vowed to return to industrial action “without notice.”

Health analysts say the move eases immediate fears of disruption in public health facilities, but pressure now mounts on the government to act swiftly to prevent another crisis.

The JDA-GH, while thanking the public, the media, and all stakeholders for their support, emphasized that its members’ welfare cannot be sidelined in the country’s healthcare system.

“We remain committed to the health of Ghanaians,” the association stressed, “but the dignity of junior doctors cannot be compromised.”
