Junior Doctors Announce Nationwide Withdrawal of Services Over Months of Unpaid Salaries.

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services following months of unpaid salaries and what it describes as unfair treatment of its members.

The association revealed that over 200 junior doctors have been working between 10 and 14 months without salaries. In addition, some medical officers who were previously on the payroll have had their salaries stopped without explanation, while more than 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for the past one year and four months.

Despite several engagements with authorities, the JDA-GH says no solution has been provided. “Despite repeated engagements with authorities and goodwill shown towards the government, no solutions have been offered,” the association said in a statement.

The doctors will begin their strike in phases. From Tuesday, 7th October to Thursday, 9th October 2025, all outpatient services will be withdrawn. Starting Friday, 10th October 2025, emergency services will also be suspended until further notice. Inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new cases will be admitted.

“The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated. The responsibility for any disruption of healthcare services lies squarely with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana,” the association warned.

The JDA-GH is calling on the government and all relevant stakeholders to act immediately to address the situation and restore normalcy in the country’s healthcare system.
