BoG Cracks Down on Unlicensed Digital Lenders After Compliance Deadline Expires

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced that unlicensed digital lenders operating in the country now risk regulatory sanctions following the expiration of the June 30, 2026, deadline for Digital Credit Services Providers (DCSPs) to regularise their operations.

The move marks a significant step in the central bank’s efforts to strengthen oversight of Ghana’s rapidly expanding digital lending industry and improve consumer protection.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 22, the BoG said all mobile loan applications and other digital credit providers that failed to obtain the required approval by the deadline could face sanctions under the country’s applicable laws and regulations.

The central bank urged Ghanaians to exercise caution when seeking digital loans, advising borrowers to deal only with providers licensed by the Bank of Ghana.

To make it easier for the public to identify legitimate lenders, the BoG said it will publish an updated list of approved Digital Credit Services Providers on its official website.

The digital lending market has grown rapidly in recent years, offering individuals and small businesses quick and convenient access to credit through mobile applications. However, the sector has also attracted concerns over unfair lending practices, unclear loan conditions, misuse of customers’ personal data, aggressive debt collection methods, and the activities of operators functioning outside the regulatory framework.

As part of its enforcement drive, the Bank of Ghana has also released a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help consumers and industry players better understand the licensing process, how to verify approved providers, and the consequences for operators that fail to comply with the new regulatory requirements.

The central bank says the measures are intended to promote a safer, more transparent, and well-regulated digital credit ecosystem while protecting consumers from the risks posed by unlicensed lending platforms.
