Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level.
The utility company said the water level has reached 45.2 feet, following heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall within the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
With the level nearing the dam’s 46-foot safety threshold, GWL said the spillage is necessary as a precautionary measure to protect the dam and surrounding communities.
Residents living downstream of the dam have been directed to evacuate their homes and move to safer areas ahead of the exercise.
GWL has also urged residents to remain alert, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put their lives at risk.
The company called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other stakeholders to put the necessary safety and evacuation measures in place.
Communities that could be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and other surrounding areas.
GWL said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as developments unfold.
The company stressed that the safety of residents remains its top priority and appealed for public cooperation as the spillage exercise approaches.
