Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says he is preparing to take legal action over what he describes as false and defamatory statements made against him by GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
The Effutu MP’s decision follows a public dispute between the two over the Minority’s scrutiny of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Sammy Gyamfi recently described Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” and challenged him to sue if he considered the remark defamatory. He also said he was prepared to defend the allegation in court.
But in a Facebook post on Saturday, August 22, Afenyo-Markin said he would pursue the appropriate legal remedies over the statements.
He maintained that his questions about GoldBod were part of his constitutional responsibility as Minority Leader and were not driven by any improper motive.
According to him, attempts to respond to legitimate parliamentary scrutiny with personal attacks and allegations were meant to shift attention away from the issues under investigation.
Afenyo-Markin said the attacks would not distract him or the Minority Caucus from their focus on GoldBod’s operations, the decisions taken under the programme and the public funds involved.
The latest development escalates the public spat between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO, with the threat of a possible defamation case now hanging over the dispute.
