The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to provide US$250,000, equivalent to about GH₵3 million, to support victims of the devastating floods that hit parts of Ghana.
The donation was announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a Facebook post.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially been informed by ECOWAS of the planned support, which is intended to provide relief to communities and individuals affected by the floods.
Ablakwa said the ministry will ensure transparency in the handling of the funds. He explained that once the money is received in the ministry’s accounts, the full amount will be transferred to the appropriate authorities for the intended relief efforts.
On behalf of the Ghanaian government, the ministry expressed its appreciation to ECOWAS for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of solidarity and African compassion at a difficult time for the country.
The June 29 floods affected communities across seven regions, displacing thousands of households and causing significant damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.
The ECOWAS support is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to provide relief and assistance to those affected as affected communities continue to recover from the disaster.
