GAB condemns alleged intimidation of bank staff during national clean-up exercise

The Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) has condemned what it describes as an attempt to demean and intimidate staff of a member bank during the national clean-up exercise held on Friday, July 10, 2026.

According to GAB, the incident occurred at the premises of one of its member banks when the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Theresa Lardi Awuni, allegedly entered the branch, proceeded to the manager’s office, and confronted staff over the bank’s decision to remain open during the exercise.

The association said a staff member who was participating in the clean-up exercise was reportedly subjected to demeaning remarks over the branch’s operations.

GAB, however, clarified that it does not support any bank that violates a lawful government directive and will take steps to address such situations when they arise.

“Equally, we will not accept conduct by any individual or group seeking to demean, intimidate, or undermine the integrity of staff of our member banks,” the association said in a statement.

The association explained that banks are classified as essential service providers and therefore allowed to operate during the exercise. It added that staff of member banks also took part in the clean-up exercise in line with directives from GAB and the President’s call for a national effort.

“As a law-abiding and significant tax-paying sector, we will not tolerate acts of intimidation or the use of abusive language against staff of our member banks,” GAB stated.

The association called for more respectful and constructive engagement on issues of public interest, while reaffirming its commitment to working with government, Parliament, and other state institutions to support Ghana’s economic development.

GAB assured the public that its member banks remain committed to complying with government directives while continuing to provide essential banking services to citizens.
