Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport.
The arrest was confirmed by senior figures within the NPP, with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, also addressing the development in a Facebook post.
According to Mr. Kodua, EOCO officers, assisted by immigration officials, picked up Mr. Aboagye at the airport before taking him into custody. He alleged that lawyers representing Mr. Aboagye have been denied access to their client and that his current whereabouts remain unknown.
The NPP further claims that no formal charges have been brought against Mr. Aboagye since his arrest.
Mr. Kodua called on the authorities to respect the constitutional rights of the detained party official by granting him immediate access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
He criticised the arrest, describing it as an act of intimidation rather than a lawful enforcement action. He also alleged that the incident forms part of what the party sees as a broader pattern of politically motivated arrests, invitations and detentions targeting members of the NPP.
The General Secretary urged state institutions to remain independent and carry out their duties in accordance with the law, warning against the use of public agencies for political purposes.
Despite the development, Mr. Kodua appealed to party supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and united while the NPP seeks further information on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Aboagye’s arrest.
EOCO has not yet issued an official statement on the arrest or the reasons for Mr. Aboagye’s detention.
