Don’t Underestimate The Black Stars – GFA President

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has urged critics not to rule out Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the Black Stars have what it takes to compete strongly on the global stage.

Ghana has qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament and has been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. While many football analysts have described the group as one of the toughest in the competition, Okraku believes Ghana is capable of defying expectations.

Speaking on the Delay Show, the GFA President emphasized the unpredictable nature of football, arguing that success at major tournaments is never guaranteed for favourites alone. He stressed that Ghana’s mix of experienced players and emerging talents gives the team a competitive edge if properly prepared.

“I have seen bad teams win big tournaments, I have also seen good teams lose big tournaments, and I have seen good teams win big tournaments. So you can never rule out any football nation, Ghana inclusive. We have a good team, and I want to win the World Cup. That is why we are doing everything possible,” Okraku said.

His remarks reflect growing optimism within Ghanaian football circles about the current squad’s potential. The Black Stars have been undergoing a rebuilding phase in recent years, blending seasoned professionals with promising young players who have impressed both locally and abroad.

The 2026 World Cup, to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, offers Ghana another opportunity to add to its rich football history. The four-time African champions remain the only African side to have reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, achieving the feat in 2010 in South Africa.

Despite facing strong opposition from England and Croatia in the group stage, Ghanaian supporters continue to express hope that the Black Stars can cause surprises. With preparations underway and confidence growing within the camp, Okraku’s message underscores belief and ambition as Ghana looks ahead to the global stage.
