A total of 342 Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa have arrived at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing repatriation exercise for citizens affected by recent xenophobic attacks.
The returnees arrived on Sunday, June 7, aboard the second flight of the second batch of evacuees. They are among more than 1,500 Ghanaians who have chosen to return home following attacks and anti-immigrant protests targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
The evacuees were received by a government delegation led by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson.
Their arrival follows the first flight of the second batch, which landed on Saturday, June 6, carrying 345 Ghanaian nationals. That group was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Gender Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
The evacuation exercise began on May 27, when the first batch of about 300 Ghanaians arrived in the country.
