Election 2024: Prof. Aning urges political parties to act responsibly and uphold electoral rules

Prof. Aning urges political parties to act responsibly and uphold electoral rules

Renowned security expert, Prof. Kwesi Aning, has called on political parties to strictly adhere to electoral guidelines as Ghana heads to the polls tomorrow.

In an interview on GHOne TV, Prof. Aning criticized all forms of electoral malpractice, including the distribution of food or engaging voters in campaign discussions while they are in the queue to vote. He emphasized that such actions are inappropriate and urged political actors to act responsibly.

“Campaigning ends before voting begins, and it is unacceptable to engage in activities aimed at influencing voters while they wait to cast their ballots. Political parties must demonstrate responsibility, adhere to the rules, and conduct themselves in ways that avoid misunderstandings and tension. Let shared principles and values guide our actions during this crucial exercise,” he stated.

Prof. Aning expressed disappointment over recent reports of electoral inducements during the special voting exercise, particularly in Ayawaso West on Monday, December 2, 2024.

Highlighting these concerns, he added, “I am deeply disappointed by incidents involving the distribution of food, followed by blatant denials. The involvement of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in these matters underscores their seriousness.”

Prof. Aning’s remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining integrity and fairness throughout the electoral process.
