Minority Chief Whip calls on Agriculture Minister to retract Eastern Region lockdown statement.

Minority Whip

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, has issued a strong response to comments made by Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, regarding the upcoming December 7 elections. The comments were made during a rally in the Eastern region on Saturday, November 23, 2024, where Acheampong, who also serves as the Minister for Food and Agriculture, confidently asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put effective measures in place to secure victory in the upcoming elections. He also made a pointed remark about the party’s readiness to confront any attempts to disrupt their electoral success, claiming that the Eastern region had been effectively “under lockdown” to ensure party unity and stability.

Acheampong’s remarks were widely interpreted as a veiled threat aimed at opposition parties, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are engaged in an intense battle to unseat the current government. The rhetoric was viewed as provocative, raising concerns about the tone of the political environment as the elections approach. His comments, delivered with an air of defiance, have been met with criticism from various political quarters, with many perceiving them as an attempt to intimidate opposition members and influence voter sentiment.

In response, Kwame Governs Agbodza addressed the remarks during the NDC’s final regional rally held in Hohoe on Saturday afternoon. He took the opportunity to reaffirm his party’s determination to stand up to Acheampong and the NPP. Agbodza emphasized that the NDC is prepared to confront any challenges posed by the ruling party and that they remain committed to ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process. He expressed confidence in the NDC’s ability to compete effectively and warned that any attempts to undermine the democratic process or intimidate voters would not be tolerated. The response highlighted the NDC’s resolve to protect the rights of voters and maintain political integrity as Ghana heads into a critical election period.
