The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of Workers’ Day, also known as May Day.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, the Interior Minister urged the general public to observe the day as a holiday across the country.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 1st May 2026, marks Workers Day (May Day), which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.
Workers’ Day is celebrated annually on May 1 to honour the contributions of workers and recognise the history of labour movements around the world.
The occasion is often marked by marches, demonstrations, and activities organised by labour unions and worker groups to advocate for improved working conditions, fair wages, and workers’ rights.
Across many countries, May Day also serves as a symbol of solidarity among workers and a reminder of the role labour plays in national development.
