Authorities Investigate Mass Fish Death at Tema Shipyard

State authorities are investigating a mass fish mortality incident recorded at the Tema Shipyard on April 6, 2026.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the incident was first detected in the early hours of April 6, 2026.

According to officials, security personnel on duty noticed large numbers of dead fish between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM, concentrated within a 50-metre radius of the shipyard’s main unloading ramp.

A rapid-response team made up of FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port authorities quickly moved to secure the area and begin preliminary investigations.

Authorities say samples have already been taken for testing. “Between 60 and 80 fish samples, and some water samples have been collected under chain-of-custody protocols for priority laboratory testing,” the statement revealed.

While investigations are ongoing, officials have assured the public that there is currently no indication of foul play or a widespread health emergency. “There is no evidence so far of deliberate sabotage or an immediate widespread health emergency,” authorities noted.

As a precautionary measure, the public has been strongly warned against consuming seafood from the affected area.

The FDA and its partners emphasized: “Do NOT harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or adjacent areas until the FDA issues an ‘All-Clear’ notice.”

However, they reassured consumers that fish sourced from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remain safe, especially when properly cooked. “Fish from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe when cooked to an internal temperature of 63°C or above,” the advisory stated.

Residents and fishermen have also been urged to report any unusual sightings. “Report sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA Hotline,” officials added.

Additionally, anyone who may have already consumed fish from the area and is experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation has been advised to seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers of possible exposure.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that updates will be provided as new information emerges. In the meantime, citizens are encouraged to rely only on verified and official sources for updates on the situation.
