Löw and Kwesi Appiah Distance Themselves from Black Stars Job

Ghana’s search for a new Black Stars head coach has taken an unexpected twist, with two of the most talked-about names publicly distancing themselves from the role.

Reports earlier in the week suggested that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had initiated talks with former Germany coach Joachim Löw, who famously guided his country to victory at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The speculation sparked excitement among fans, with many seeing his potential appointment as a major statement of intent.

However, that excitement has quickly been tempered. Sources close to Löw have dismissed the reports, insisting that there has been no contact—formal or informal—between the German tactician and the GFA. While he is said to be open to new opportunities, the Black Stars job is not currently on his radar.

At the same time, former Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah has also refuted claims linking him to a return for a third stint. His name had resurfaced amid growing calls for a local coach to take charge ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers.

Appiah, however, has made his position clear. He says he has not been approached by the GFA and is currently focused on other commitments, even though he remains deeply connected to the national team.

The coaching vacancy follows the departure of Otto Addo, a decision that has stirred mixed reactions across the football community. While some have questioned the timing, GFA President Kurt Okraku has defended the move, describing it as a necessary step taken in the national interest.

According to Okraku, the decision was purely strategic, aimed at positioning Ghana to compete strongly on the global stage rather than merely making up the numbers.

With both Löw and Appiah ruling themselves out, uncertainty now hangs over the GFA’s search process. Whether the association is quietly working behind the scenes on other targets or facing early challenges in securing a top candidate remains unclear.

What is certain, however, is that time is not on Ghana’s side. With key matches approaching, fans are growing increasingly anxious for clarity hoping the next appointment will restore confidence and steer the Black Stars back to winning ways.
