Two Ghanaian Soldiers Critically Injured After Missile Attack on Ghana Battalion Base in Southern Lebanon

Two Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Southern Lebanon have been critically injured after their base came under missile attack amid the escalating exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.

In a statement issued today march 6,the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the Battalion Headquarters of the Ghanaian contingent serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was struck during the attacks on Friday evening.

According to the military, the incident occurred between 5:45 p.m. and 5:52 p.m. local time, when two missiles landed within the Ghanaian battalion’s position.

“The Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in UNIFIL, Lebanon came under two missile attacks between 1745 and 1752 hours local time today,” the statement said.

The attack left two soldiers critically injured, while another soldier suffered severe trauma following the explosions. Military authorities also confirmed that the Officers’ Mess facility was hit and completely burnt down during the strike.

Despite the damage and injuries, the Ghana Armed Forces said the wounded soldiers are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.

“The injured are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable while arrangements are underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital,” the statement added.

The military further assured Ghanaians that the rest of the troops stationed at the base remain safe as they have taken shelter in reinforced underground bunkers due to the fragile security situation in the area.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has formally protested the incident at the United Nations headquarters in New York through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Authorities have called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international obligations and ensure the safety of peacekeepers operating in the region.

“The Government of Ghana… has protested the unfortunate incident at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and urged the parties involved in the conflict… to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers in the theatre,” the statement concluded.

The attack highlights the growing dangers faced by international peacekeepers as tensions continue to rise in Southern Lebanon.
